The Canadian government has had a long and disgraceful history of racist policies and practices. It has undertaken many legal measures to deter or assimilate other races and to profit from their injustice. These measures include, but are not limited to: the head tax on all Chinese people entering Canada from 1885-1923 in order to limit and eventually bring to an end to immigration from China; the dispersal of Japanese-Canadians living in British Columbia to internment camps during World War Two because they were feared of as enemies; and the disgraceful treatment of Native American people, as their children were forced to go to residential schools in order to eradicate their culture. Although there is not much that can be done now to erase this past, the Canadian government must shoulder the blame for this discriminatory foundation on which our society continues to rest. The outcome of these historical injustices will forever be a stain on Canada�s past; a country that is self-proclaimed to be proud of its multiculturalism and equal rights.
