Leonard Peltier is a Native American activist who believes that his people should not be forced to live in poverty and under the influence of the United Stated Government. From the time he was eight years old; to the present day, many people around the world believe that Leonard Peltier has been a victim of our government’s policies toward Native Peoples. Despite all the good deeds he has done and continues to do for his people, Leonard Peltier sits in jail.
This courageous man represents the great divide between the American citizens who enjoy all the rights given by the United States Government, and those who are deprived of their rights.
Leonard Peltier was born September 12, 1944 in North Dakota on the Anishinabe Turtle Mountain Reservation. Today he considers himself to be a citizen of the Lakota and Anishinabe nations. He has 13 brothers and sisters. One of his given names is Tate Wikuwa or “Wind Chases the Sun.” He has been incarcerated in Leavenworth Prison for the last 29 years.
