Symbolism in The Yellow Wallpaper Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, symbolism is used to portray the physical and mental restraints of the main character as well as her slowly deteriorating mind. Three distinct symbols in this story are used to represent the woman: the house, the yellow wallpaper in her bedroom, and the figure that is seen behind the yellow wallpaper. Each symbol provides the reader with a better understanding of how the main character slowly reaches her breaking point at the end of the story. The physical aspects of the house clearly represent the unstable character. The narrator refers to the house as “the most beautiful place! It is quite alone, standing well back from the road . . . ,” which could lead one to conclude that the lonely wife is physically attractive yet held back from society by her husband (John), because of her nervous disorder (Gilman 783). The narrator continues in saying “there is something strange about that house - - I can feel it” (Gilman 783). The author wants the reader that something is mentally unstable regarding the wife.
