‘“Bees have a secret life we don’t know anything about”’ (Kidd 148). Despite the title, this book wasn’t focused primarily on bee keeping. Lily Owens was a 14 year old girl being raised on a peach farm by her cruel father she unlovingly calls T. Ray, and was cared for by one of his workers: Rosaleen. According to T. Ray, Lily accidentally killed her mother, but Lily doesn’t remember what really happened. One day, when Rosaleen was going into town with Lily to vote for the first time ever, she ran into a gang of white men who beleaguered her. Rosaleen got battered and arrested. It was then that Lily decided to break Rosaleen out of jail, and run away from her dad. The reason Lily and Rosaleen decided to go to Tiburon, South Carolina was simply because Lily found a picture frame that belonged to her mother with the word Tiburon written on the back. After some time of traveling, Lily and Rosaleen finally reached Tiburon where they came across a beekeeping farm. There they met the Boatwright sisters: August, June, and May.
