The Story of An Hour - Independence Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

I selected this passage from “The Story of An Hour” because it shows independence, contradiction, and love. The author Kate Chopin describes Mrs. Mallard as being incapable of living on her own and doing as she pleases. In addition, Mrs. Mallard’s husband is overly protective of his wife for fear of anything happening to her. Mallard yearns for freedom in order to express her true self. She believes that if she can not be herself then love is meaningless. The passage above can be explained in several different ways. The independence Mallard strove for is clearly stated in this passage. She knew she always wanted independence but never really had the chance to obtain it. Once her husband had passed, she finally had that freedom. Now that she knows how individualism feels, she now realizes why she had all those mixed emotions about her husband. In this passage, she was contradicting herself by saying, “And yet she loved him—sometimes” (450).
