Influence of Dostoyevsky’s Words and Manipulation in: Style, Voice, and Surroundings Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Fyodor Dostoyevsky takes the readers on an intriguing and complex journey in his novel Crime and Punishment. This journey forces one to explore his or hers own feelings and emotions. Dostoyevsky skillfully explores the characters and settings to persuade and manipulate the reader’s position. The author utilizes a number of language styles, comparative writing forms, and perspectives on a number of varying ideas in the novel. He also skillfully puts the main character, and the reader for that matter, in a position of ambiguity over the idea of guilt. One first meets Raskolnikov, the anti-hero of the novel Crime and Punishment, as a scared or shy, poverty-stricken, talented graduate student. “He was crushed by poverty…exceptionally handsome…From time to time, he would mutter something from the habit of talking to himself,” (Dostoyevsky, 1-2). This creates an instant sympathy from the reader. This level of “affection” is only heightened when one sees the inner workings of Raskolnikov’s complex mind.
