The Great Gatsby
Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, tells the story of a group of people all connected on certain ways and looking at themselves and each other in different lights. The eyes of TJ Eckleburg, our narrator Nick, and many other characters pry into the novel and control the essential relationships of the story. The eyes of TJ Eckleburg look down upon the Valley of Ashes judging the moral decline of New York City the same way Nick judges the moral behavior of his acquaintances.
In Nick’s eyes, the people of wealth and privilege lack loyalty and live only for money and the status that accompanies it. Nick falls for Jordan even though she possesses some tragic flaws. She is controlled by wealth and “was incurably dishonest” (58) Nick had claimed previously that “I am one of the few honest people I know” (59) implying honesty is a quality he respects. The illegal ways Gatsby acquired his money and his affair with Daisy are not strong morals in the eyes of Nick.
