Anne Dudley Bradstreet epitomizes a puritan, an American woman, and a poet. As the puritan, she seems to struggle with her worldliness, as the American she took a lively interest in the contemporary scene, as a woman she argues against the aspersions cast upon her sex, and as the poet she transcends them and makes her craft her glory (Walker, 1979, pp. 98-123). These four facts have greatly influenced the way we read her work; however, we can see the tensions generated by these conflicting roles. According to Cheryl Walker, �But one should not overvalue the tension at the expense of acknowledging that her best poetry achieves at least a literary resolution of the conflict�; after all, she deserves her place in literary history (Walker, 1979, pp. 98-123).
