Views of Othello Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In act 1 we are provided with several contradictory accounts of Othello. Like most novels the first act is critical in establishing setting, theme and characters, as well as often foreshadowing future events. In act 1 we are shown the different opinion of different characters in regards to Othello. Each character’s opinion differs, as a result of personal gripes and motives, and tends to help mould the readers own opinions of Othello. There are those characters in the novel that have negative views of Othello. The reader is almost immediately introduced to Iago in the novel and is quickly made aware of his hatred for Othello. Iago’s hatred is based on several factors. He is a racist, often calling Othello the “Moor” and a “barbary horse” as well as an “old black ram”. Iago is also jealous and angry as a result of Othello promoting Cassio to lieutenant as opposed to himself. He believes himself to be more sufficient for the job claiming that Cassio was “a great arithmetician,” however had “never set a squadron in the field.” At the end of Act 1 Iago suggest......
