The High Self-Esteem Myth In American schools there is a widespread myth that high self-esteem is a requirement for a student to learn. In “Myth 5: Self-esteem Must Come First – Then Learning” Larry E. Frase and William Streshly stress that high self-esteem is not the answer when it comes to teaching American students. High self-esteem is often preached and taught in American schools. Self-esteem is becoming the focus of American schools, and is thought to be extremely necessary for the educational growth of the students. The schools think, “high student self-esteem is the number-one goal and must precede all else” (Frase and Streshly 514). However, according to Frase and Streshly, the thought that “students must feel good about themselves before they can learn” is not true (Frase and Streshly 515). The authors also go on to explain that many parents want their schools to raise the standards. In California, the schools place students who use another language as their main language in bilingual classes to keep their self-esteem in tact, but parents of Hispanic descent want......
