History of Cocaine Although there are many types of drugs, both legal and illegal, cocaine happens to be one of the most used and abused drugs in the United States today (Perrine 5). Cocaine comes from a native South American coca plant that can be found mostly in the high mountain ranges of South America. In ancient times, the South American natives would use the cocaine that came from these plants for religious and medical reasons. It was used to fight fatigue and hunger, and to enhance their endurance (Perrine 8). At first, the drug was banned by the Spanish leaders but then they realized the natives had become addicted and could barely work without it. These same Spanish leaders introduced cocaine to Europe in the early 1800�s, where it was only used occasionally until the 19th century (Perrine 12). It was in 1859, when the active ingredient of the coca plant was first separated. The leaves of the coca plant were processed into cocaine hydrochloride, which is the power form of the drug (�History of Cocaine� 1).
