The bull is unique in the world of symbolism in that he is both a solar and a lunar creature, which in part sparks his archetypal complexity. The bull has both significant solar and masculine depictions as well as lunar and feminine ones. However, the bull’s masculinity is not diminished by its feminine lunar connections. Therefore, the bull can have very contrasting elements and representations. For example, in Egypt a sacred black bull known as the Apis bull is a symbol of death and reincarnation, yet in the Hindu religion according to the Rig-Veda, the heavenly bull Rudra fertilizes the earth with his sperm. The depiction of the bull symbol in a solar or lunar sense depends upon the culture.
In a solar sense, the bull usually represents:
• Masculinity and strength
• The powers of the sun
• Kingly power
• Male fertility, fiery temperament, and role as father of the herd, which when combined often makes the bull a masculine sun-god
