Georg Simmel�s ideals and theories have had an effect on countless individuals in his field of sociology and philosophy, but during his time he was no more than an outcast in his ring of peers. Although he is currently seen as an influential figure, what make makes this man so extraordinary and what has led many individuals to study and admire his work? Simmel began his life from humble beginnings. He was born in 1858 in Berlin, Germany. Simmel was the youngest of seven children but had very weak family ties during his early childhood and into his adult life. His mother remained distant and had little influence upon Simmel�s life. His father was a successful businessman. Simmel was left without any parental guidance when his father passed away when he was a young boy and he was left with a guardian, which happened to be a friend of the family (Coser). Simmel�s Guardian owned a music-publishing house and raised Simmel catholic, although his father had become Christian after converting from Judaism ("Georg Simmel"). Simmel studied history and philosophy at the University of Berlin......
