Shawshank Redemption Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Shawshank Redemption is set at Shawshank prison, a fictional prison in America, between the years 1949 and 1966. Shawshank is a depressing, violent place and corrupt place riddled with hypocrisy. Andy Du-Fresne spends 19 years in Shawshank fighting to retain hope when there is little hope of redemption; having been sent to prison for two life sentences back to back even though almost all hope has been sucked out of the other inmate around him. This setting is brought out and shown by the use of visual and oral techniques, the director Frank Darabont wonderfully uses these techniques.
The setting is presented as being a depressing place. We are first introduced to the prison at the beginning of the film by a helicopter shot rising up and over the walls of the prison. The director uses this particular shot to show how large and imposing the prison walls are. He also uses this shot along with the dark grey colours of the high brick walls to show the prison is a fortress, whose walls are impenetrable and to give the prison a very cold and sad feeling.
