Environmental Impact Of Mountaintop Mining Bonnie Caldwell Business Ethics 242S-401 Professor Carnahan September 17, 2006 Abstract After congress passed the clean air act in 1990, the industrial sector of the economy had to change its operations and produce products with less pollutants emitted into the air. Because of a high demand for clean burning coal, mountain top removal mining has become one of the largest providers of that coal. Although mountain top removal has been around since World War I, it was considered to be uneconomical for coal operators. Due to advances in technology it has become one of the cheapest and fastest ways of producing low cost clean burning fuel. Unfortunately there is a negative side of producing economical and clean burning fuels. There is an environmental impact on forest, fish, wildlife, and streams. Even with the National Environmental Protection Act of 1969 coal operators have found ways to circumvent the laws and continue their mining practices.
