Dual interpretations on the Symbolisms of The Lottery In Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery, the use of symbolism is highly evident throughout the story; it is portrayed in the characters, their actions, and the setting. The author utilizes it to illustrate how inhumane and unreasonable people can be, and how they succumb to tradition without question, even to the point of murder. There are two interpretations of this symbolism, depending on the perception of a person. In an ordinary person’s point of view the more general effect on human life are deciphered; while in a feminists view, it’s a totally different idea. General Symbolism (on human nature) The use of symbolism allows Jackson to enhance her theme: the residents of the town in The Lottery are victims of ritual and social decrees. The story started with a good atmosphere, making an implication of an annual ordinary lottery with your normal everyday townspeople; but when the black box was introduced into the setting, the mood and the atmosphere of the people changed, which sort of revealed a little mystery of the story.
