Theories of Crime 3/11/05 The Alienist by Caleb Carr The Alienist, by Caleb Carr, took place in 1896 and it was about a serial killer of boy prostitutes in New York City. At this time people with psychological disorders were known as aliens, so psychologists were known as alienists. Dr. Kreizler is one of the main characters and he is the alienist in the book. He was hired by Teddy Roosevelt, who was the police commissioner at the time. Kreizler was hired along with a police reporter for the New York Times named, John Moore, secretly because Roosevelt didn�t want the public to know he hired psychologists to help crack the case. One night Moore was awoken by one of Kreizler�s mental patients and was told to rush to a nearby address. At this address there was a dead boy dressed like a women because he was a male prostitute. His hands, buttocks, penis, and eyes were all cut off. Part of Roosevelt�s investigation team consisted of the Isaacson brothers, Lucius and Marcus, new and talented detectives, and Cyrus Montrose who acted as Kreizler�s bodyguard.
