In the Fisherman and his Wife, one will see how much more this story can be appreciated than the Portuguese variant The Baker’s Idle Son. Both fairy tales have a lot of content that can be compared, but the differences in The Baker’s Idle Son show how different a similar tale can be. The Fisherman and his Wife is about a couple that lives in a hovel and are poor. The man goes out to fish one day and catches a flounder that can speak. The concerned flounder is let back into the sea and upon the man’s return to his hovel; he speaks of what occurred to his wife. His wife found out the flounder was a magic prince and told her husband to go back and call for the flounder to give them a cottage. The man does so non-willingly and finds his wife’s wish is granted while the color of the sea had already started to change form a beautiful blue to a not so smooth yellow and green. Immediately after the man returns, his wife demands the man return to the flounder to ask for a palace.
