The Resurrected Loomis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Resurrected Loomis Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, a primarily historical play written by American playwright and poet August Wilson, depicts what life was like for African-Americans in the 1910’s. Joe Turner’s Come and Gone deals with a time in American history when the sons and daughters of recently freed slaves with intentions of fleeing the discrimination encountered in the South journeyed to the booming industrial cities of the North in search of prosperity, a new way of life, and, essentially, their own identities (Wikipedia). Although at this point in the 1910’s slavery was officially illegal Joe Turner, a plantation owner, deliberately and illegally ignored these laws impressing African Americans into slavery for seven years on his land. Herald Loomis, the play’s protagonist and main character states in regards of Joe Turner, "Kept everybody seven years. He'd go out hunting and bring back forty men at a time."
