In the decade after World War I, a new architectural style called “modern architecture” emerged in many western countries. The main characteristics of modern architecture include the rational use of modern materials, the principles of functionalist planning, and a rejection of unnecessary traditional ornamentation. The theory of functionalism was developed by Louis Henry Sullivan, a mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright. The theory basically stated that an architect should design a building based on the purpose of that building. Since the middle of the 19th century the architectural world had been searching to create a new style of architecture that would put to use recently developed building materials and suit the needs of a modern society. The leaders of modern architecture viewed a building as a volume of space enclosed by light with thin curtain walls and resting on a series of slender piers.
