Travis Millard Period 5 Oedipus the King – Major Grade Essay In the classic Greek tragedy of Oedipus the King, major themes of the novel had much relation to Greek culture, and as the tragic story challenged the ideas of the Greeks, it also helped in confirming many beliefs held by them. Oedipus the King employed the theme of fate and its supremacy throughout the novel. Although destiny was often times thought to be beaten; the story’s theme of unconquerable fate shows the strength of long-time beliefs of pre-ordained destiny. Oedipus Rex was a man of misfortune and bad fate. From the start of his life he was already cursed with upcoming calamity. He had fled Corinth as a young man in effort to flee the horrid prophecy that was bestowed upon him. “Apollo once declared that I would come to couple with my mother, and with these hands of mine spill out of the life-blood of my father.
