African Art and the Yoruba Tribe Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“At the risk of promoting an inaccurate sense of Africa as a place of unified or monolithic artistic practice, the question of what, if anything, is distinctively “African” about African art…” (Visona pg.14 -15) African Art is utilitarian containing pieces that display communication, innovation, and the aesthetics of Africa. However, African Art stretches over a wide range of Africa and has a wide range of symbolic meaning. For that reason, I have decided to narrow my search to Western Africa where I will compare and contrast two ancestral masks, the Bundu helmet (Gola, Sande Association) from Sierra Leone and the Banda mask (Nalu or Baga people of Guinea) from Guinea. This 19th century Bundu helmet mask of the Sande female society was originally in Sierra Leone; Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Guinea and Liberia. The helmets mythology says that it had be left by the Sande spirits which could have been members among the West Atlantic-speaking peoples, Mende-Speaking peoples or the Kru-speaking Bassa.
