Analysis of My Papa’s Waltz Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Analysis of My Papa’s Waltz Roethke’s “My Papa’s Waltz” is about a man reliving a disgruntled memory from his boyhood. His father was in a drunken state and carelessly harmed the boy while waltzing in the kitchen. Roethke’s imagery, diction and meter and rhyme represent an irresponsible intoxicated father aggressively mishandling his son while waltzing. The imagery Roethke creates throughout the poem is a vivid portrayal of a sloppy drunken father forcing his son to waltz and one comedic scene that lightens the tone. The first two lines set the mood of the entire poem, “the whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy”. We have learned his “papa” drinks heavy liquor and his actions will soon follow. In line ten, "battered on one knuckle," the father, because of his knuckle, screams potential violence. And in the next stanza his father “beat time on [his] head,” which indicates a painful way to keep his sons timing correct. To interrupt these violent images Roethke gives us a comedic scene of the boy and his father waltzing in circles around the kitchen and pans fallin......
