Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the book, The Catcher in the rye, Allie Caulfield is the most important character. Allie is Holden’s younger brother who died of leukemia at the age of thirteen. Holden claimed that Allie was the brightest of the Caulfields. Holden never truly got over Allie’s death. One reason is he never found closure. This is something that is reflected in Holden’s thoughts and personality. Allie is an important character because he affects Holden so much. Allie’s baseball mitt, death, and absence all affect Holden in great ways throughout the book. Allie once had a baseball mitt, in which he inscribed many poems in green ink. This mitt is very valuable to Holden. He has never let go of it. Holden is constantly reminded of Allie every time he thinks or looks at it. Holden tries to use this as a source of closure for Allie’s death, but it only screws him up even more. This is mostly because thinking of Allie does not lead to real closure. This baseball mitt also brings an extra special connection between Holden and Jane Gallagher. Jane is the only person Holden showed Allie’s mitt......
