COAL MINING – GENERAL INFORMATION Coal mining is the extraction of coal from the earth’s ground. The extraction of coal is used for fuel. Coal mining can be done on the surface of the earth and on mountaintops. It can also be done underground. Coal mining is one of the most dangerous jobs available, especially underground mining. Mines are deep, they have limited air. Coal mines are dark, wet and claustrophobic. Mines can be uncomfortably hot or cold. Some other dangers are possible flood, collapse, blasts, fires, hazardous gases, and coal or stone dust circulation risk. One of the main dangers of coal mining is that coal has organic material and the oxygen gets in a reaction which can lower the air quality in the mine. One other problem is coal contains methane gas which is highly flammable. Methane is not toxic, but can be an immediate health hazard that can cause burns if it ignites.
