Biography Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on the July 18, 1918. His father Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe was the principal councilor to the Acting Paramount Chief of Thembuland. After his father s death, Mandela became the Paramount Chief�s ward; where he would be groomed to one day assume the positions\ as Chief. Although Mandela knew that his father wanted him to carry the title as Chief, he had other goals and aspirations; influenced by the cases that came before the Chief s court, he determined to become a lawyer.
