The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 has set the landscape for the new religious America we are seeing today. This act has allowed many different people from all over the world to move to the United States of America, the land of the free. Along with them came their religious traditions and customs, many which I am unfamiliar with. Diane Eck states that in the United States there are more Muslims than members of the Presbyterian Church, more Muslims than Episcopalians, and as many Muslims as Jewish people.(pgs 2-3) Since I am from a small rural town in northeast Ohio, I did not know how diverse our country has become. It is amazing to discover that Los Angeles is one of largest conglomeration of Buddhist followers in the United States. Even more surprising is the fact there are so many Muslims living in the Toledo and Detroit areas. I suppose I need to open my eyes a little more to the fact that these religious peoples are right here in my backyard and that were are such a diverse nation now compared to thirty or so years ago.
