The percentage of overweight Americans has more than doubled in the past decade. Obesity is the “fastest-growing cause of illness and death in the United States,” U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona states. It is associated with at least 300,000 deaths a year, causing more than 30 obesity-related diseases, ranging from heart disease and stroke to arthritis and breathing problems (Greenblatt). The reasons associated to these deaths and health problems due to obesity aren’t too hard to fathom when one takes some time to think about it. How often are people walking to work every day rather than driving? How often are people out to eat instead of cooking meals at home? The question for policymakers is whether the weight gain is just a matter of individual responsibility or whether a society that makes it so easy to get fat should be retooled (Greenblatt).
