Language in Plath's Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The sow in “Sow” is presented by Sylvia Plath utilizing language. As the language of the poem develops the perceptions of the neighbor and the narrator’s, the reader’s perceptions are formed. The neighbor views the pig as an amazing creature, while the narrator perceives the sow as less than even the most common pig. The reader then forms their own opinion based upon these opinions. Plath portrays the pig using positive and negative diction and sensory imagery. Language enables the poet to describe this animal, as well as other reactions to it. The neighbor and narrator view the sow differently, as shown through the use of language. From these views, a reader’s personal perception can be created. The neighbor thinks of the pig as “great.” He keeps it as a “secret” from everyone. He believes the sow is fantastic, and must hide it from “public stare, prize ribbon, and pig show.” The narrator, because of the neighbor’s actions, becomes curious about this “great” pig. After actually seeing the sow, the narrator realizes it is far from great. It is described as “Nor even on......
