Religion is a cultural universal that has been in practice for at least 60,000 years. Religion is embedded in the way of life for many cultures. It dictates most aspects of life from clothing, to marriage, economy, and politics. The Africans brought to the Americas starting in the late fifteenth century were uprooted from their homes and shipped across an ocean to become little more than a possession. They were forced to leave the only culture, religion and way of life they ever knew. As a result of this mass forced migration many African religions were lost completely or formed atypical unions with Christianity. From the beginning of the slave trade in the West Indies and the American Colonies, slaves were brought to the New World under the pretense of being converted to Christianity. �The countries involved in the slave trade-Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, France, and England- defended slavery on the grounds that Africans must be converted from paganism and barbarism to Christianity and that the enslavement of Africans would be the best chance to convert them.� ......
