Utilitarianism and Kantianism Evaluated through Reflection on J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Utilitarianism is a theory based on the promotion of good consequences and judgment of actions according to the results. Kantianism is another theory of ethics, which believes that a human life cannot be measured by quantity. This paper will present several aspects of these two theories and illustrate them with episodes from J. M. Coetzee’s novel Disgrace. The theory of utilitarianism, developed by Jeremy Bentham, defines the rightness of an act based on amount of pain and pleasure it produces. This is a hedonistic principle (the utility principle) that defines ‘pleasure and pain’ as the two most important and powerful factors that govern human life. According to Bentham, human beings tend to pursue pleasure and avoid pain and these are useful guides to tell what we ought to do and what we ought not. He defined happiness as the difference of pleasure and pain. He introduced his calculus that would calculate the amount of happiness produced by our actions. This calculus would asses the utility of actions based on seven tests. Bentham only recognized the sum total of individual utilit......
