The Scarlet Letter Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“…in the view of infinite Purity, we are sinners all alike” (235). The story of The Scarlet Letter has astounded readers young and old for many generations with its risqué topics and remarkable characters. The book was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, who begins the story in the 17th century when guilt, sin, and shame surrounded a woman by the name of Hester Prynne. The story is based on the real evil which Hawthorne found in his young life, the evil which “leaves its mark on generation after generation…” (Adventures in American Literature, 211). Hester lives in Boston, Massachusetts where we first meet her and her exquisite daughter Pearl, exiting the jail to stand before the towns people on the gallows. In a small town, everyone knew your wrongs, and Hester’s was that of sin. In the generation which The Scarlet Letter is based, there was little difference between church and state, “as befitted a people amongst whom religion and law were almost identical” (47), this makes Hester guilty of her crime in the eyes of the law, as well as God.
