The Power of Fear in The Lord of the Flies Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Power is the main key in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. It is created, dismissed, used, and abused. Through out the novel, the combined fear of the boys on the island creates a power, which is manipulated in several different ways. Primarily, Ralph gains power with the conch and his natural leadership skills. But as the novel progresses, Jack begins to gain more and more power through a much different source than Ralph’s: through fear. The power of fear is also demonstrated and symbolized with ‘the beast’, with the deaths of Simon and Piggy. Jack slowly installs fear in the mind of the boys to gain more power over Ralph. For example, when Jack first hears about the beast, he sees it as an opportunity to gain authority and a higher status. Jack dismisses the idea of the “beastie”, but “If there was a snake, we’d hunt it and kill it” (48). By saying this, Jack is trying to create a brave and fearless image for himself.
