The Nation of Islam was founded in 1930 in Detroit, Michigan (The Nation of Islam - A History, 2006). At this time in the United States right after World War I, combined with The Great Depression, it led to social conditions which created unrest among blacks. Blacks had to cram into overcrowded, poor urban areas and compete against whites for jobs. Lynchings, race riots and other forms of terrorism against blacks continued. These conditions sparked the ignition to fuel the beginning of a black nationalist movement. Wallace Dodd Farad, also known as Walli Farad or Walli Farad Muhammad, was given credit for starting the Nation of Islam (The Nation of Islam Online, 2006).
