The Year The Dream Died
The year 1968, the year that reporter Jules Witcover says was “the Year The Dream Died,” was the turning point for the nation’s future and a time when many people’s hope for a better America died. This is shown through national politics such as LBJ’s decision to not run for a second term, the split of the Democratic party, and Nixon’s presidential election and through the Civil Rights movement as the belief of passive resistance turns to militant resistance, the assassinations of MLK and Robert Kennedy, and the development of new civil rights groups including the Black Panthers and the Black Muslims.
During the election year of 1968, national politics and politicians carried the burden of a growing unpopular war, a failing Great Society program, the growing resurgence of the civil rights movement, and the rise of protests from both media and public.
