Jim Crow Laws The Jim Crow Laws came forward in southern states after the Civil War. First passed in the 1880s by lawmakers, whom were upset about their loss to the North and the end of slavery, the laws separated the races in all ways of life. The resulting lawmaking barrier to equal rights created a racial social group system that favored whites and repressed blacks, an institutionalized form of discrimination that grew in following decades with help from the U.S. Supreme Court (Folmsbee, 1949). Although the laws came under attack over the next half century, real progress against them did not begin until the Court began dismantling segregation in the 1950s. The loose ends of the Jim Crow system were finally brought an end to in the 1960s through the hard work of the civil rights movement. The start of Jim Crow was positioned in the worn out South of the mid-nineteenth century. The Civil War had ended, but its hostility had not; the war of values and political character continued.
