In his Letter Concerning Toleration John Locke writes his reasons for his staunch support of religious freedom. At the time of his writing, Locke had been observing the Catholic Church not only convert followers by the sword but also their rampant crusade to stamp out any competing religions. Locke held a contrary view to John Hobbe’s Leviathan in which Hobbes says that the only way to end civil unrest is one religion practiced by all people. Locke claimed the opposite; his view was that only by tolerance of one another’s belief systems could civil unrest really be prevented. Locke explains through several main points that one religion can have no substantiated proof that it is the one religion, and even if it was, the coercion of converts cannot really provide for salvation for salvation can only come to the willing. In addition, Locke says that individuals have no real control over their soul, and there is no guarantee that every religious belief set even provides for the concept of the human soul.
