Today in the United States, many women are looked down upon compared to the male gender. It is common in the professional area that a male will receive a job over a female even if he has the same, or possibly less credentials than her. Women are expected to either stay at home and take care of their family and children, or get a job that is nurturing such as teaching or nursing. From this reading, I learned about the females as a minority group and the characteristics that set them apart from males. When reading chapter ten from James Henslin�s Essentials of Sociology, I found it shocking that sociologists classify females as a minority group because of the discrimination they receive based on physical or cultural characteristics (Henslin 2006: 248). Whenever I hear the term minority group, I think of groups such as African Americans and Christians, which are minority groups based on race and religious views.
