The Count of Monte Cristo Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
This story takes place in the early 1800’s in Marseilles, France. Edmond Dantes, the main character of the story, is introduced coming into the port aboard the Pharaon, a big ship. The captain of the ship had passed and Dantes was to be the next captain. He asked for two weeks off to be married to his loving fiancée Mercedes. He visits his father and then his fiancée and life is well for him.
Then, some of his friends get together and create a conspiracy against him because they are jealous of him. Danglars, the treasurer of the Pharaon, is jealous of Dante because he is about to become the captain at such a long age. Caderousse is a rude neighbor who had helped him once, but now is rude and critical towards him. He also made Dante’s father repay back a loan in full, which caused his father to be poor and ill. Fernand Mondego is jealous because of Mercedes.
