This story takes place in the early 1800�s in Marseilles, France. Edmond Dantes, the main character of the story, is introduced coming into the port aboard the Pharaon, a big ship. The captain of the ship had passed and Dantes was to be the next captain. He asked for two weeks off to be married to his loving fianc�e Mercedes. He visits his father and then his fianc�e and life is well for him. Then, some of his friends get together and create a conspiracy against him because they are jealous of him. Danglars, the treasurer of the Pharaon, is jealous of Dante because he is about to become the captain at such a long age. Caderousse is a rude neighbor who had helped him once, but now is rude and critical towards him. He also made Dante�s father repay back a loan in full, which caused his father to be poor and ill. Fernand Mondego is jealous because of Mercedes. They set up Dantes and then Villefort is a prosecutor and questions him.
