I was born December 28, 1856 in Staunton, Virginia. I spent most of my childhood in Augusta, Georgia however, due to my father being the minister at the First Presbyterian Church. At the age of fourteen I moved with my family to Colombia, South Carolina where my father taught at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary. From an early age religion was an important part of my life and instilled in me deep christian morals and values. I grew up a slower learner however because of possibly having dyslexia, which haperned my ability to learn to read until I was twelve years old. I was however very disciplined and determined which helped me achieve much success later in my life. I attended Davidson College for a year before transfering to Princton. After high accalades at Princeton, I graduated in 1879 and continued my education studying law at the University of Virginia. After a short stent practicing law, I turned my efforts back towards education where I earned a Ph. D. from John Hopkins University.
