There are many different sociological viewpoints on the role of religion within society. Conflict theorists, such as Marxists and Feminists see religion as a tool of social control and oppression, creating social divisions and promoting conflict. In contrast to this Functionalist writers, such as Durkheim, view religion as providing a way in which society can be united and social divisions such as class boundaries can be broken.
Many Marxists argue that religion is another reflection of the contradictions within the economic infrastructure, and is another way in which ruling class ideology is transmitted to the working class.
