The Irish Republican Army which was formed in the early 1900’s in Ireland wanted Ireland to gain its independence from England, and become a free-state, they succeeded in helping part of Ireland become free, however they have yet to free Northern Ireland from England. The fight over Ireland began in the 1600’s when Catholics and Protestants were feuding. Protestants were slaughtered by “Bloody” Mary I of England, while she was trying to return England to Catholicism, many of the Protestants fled to Northern Ireland (mostly the country of Ulster) and settled there (Bardin pg. 1). In 1801, the political fire began to fuel when The Union Law was passed. The Union Law acknowledged the Island of Ireland as part of the British Empire. The protestants in Northern Ireland were content since Great Britain had since become a mostly protestant state under Elizabeth I, after the death of Queen Mary I (Bardin pg. 2).
