The Great Gatsby Essay The characters Tom and Jay Gatsby, in the novel The Great Gatsby acts very childish through the book. Tom lies, disrespects women, he is a cheater, and he would drink to excess. Gatsby would obsess over a girl and would sell alcohol and throw extravagant parties. Fitzgerald would put a character like Tom in this novel because Tom represents how the 1920s were for women. Gatsby shows how America was at the time and all the hard times there were going through like prohibition. Tom is immature with his dishonesty to a few characters in the novel but, he is mostly dishonest to his wife Daisy. He lies to Daisy by not telling her about Myrtle who is his mistress and Daisy had to find out on her own. They weren’t a very happy couple. For example, "Daisy and Tom were sitting opposite each other at the kitchen table....They weren't happy...yet they weren't unhappy either. There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture, and anybody would have said that they were conspiring together." (Fitzgerald 146). You can tell that there was no trust......
