Gregory the First reigned from 590-604 and was named the fourth Doctor of the Church in the early Middle Ages. Gregory the great served as Pope during a difficult time. Barbarians, specifically the Lombards, had invaded Italy and asked for a huge ransom payment to leave. Other difficulties included a serious shortage of food, and many displaced individuals due to the fighting. Gregory attempted to limit the influence of the Lombards and Greeks. Gregory had seen heretics destroy the growth of the eastern Catholic Church. To prevent a reoccurrence in the west, Gregory took a stand against heretics, denouncing their actions. In particular, Gregory dealt with the heresy of Eutychius. Eutychius taught there was only one nature in Jesus, rather than the orthodox dualism. This controversy escalated to the point where the Emperor eventually decided Gregory was correct and forced Eutychius to destroy his writings.
