Hannah Arendt’s Totalitarianism Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Totalitarianism: Part Three of the Origins of Totalitarianism, Hannah Arendt attempts to provide a historical analysis of the origins and development of what we have come to know as totalitarianism. She believes that totalitarianism is unlike any other form of political government that we have seen in history. Arendt describes this unique form of government as being built upon “total terror” and ideological fiction. Totalitarianism is the belief that law should come from the state which asserts political control over life. In her view there are three stages of totalitarianism: “the prepower stage” which uses propaganda in order to gain support from and organize the masses, the consolidation and exercise of state power, and “total domination.” These three stages unite in the same common goal of eliminating all threats to totalitarianism especially the most severe which is individual spontaneity. Totalitarianism doesn’t kill the individuals that it deems undesirable but rather it goes a step further and uses the novel techniques of total domination, ideology, and loneliness to elimi......
