Alphonse Capone (Al Capone) - The Famous Al of All Time Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Alphonse Capone, better known as Al, is one of America’s best-known gangsters and also had one of the leading roles in the illegal activities that went on during the 1920’s prohibition era. The reason why Chicago became known as a lawless city was because of what Capone was doing. Al Capone was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a rough neighborhood and was a member of two “kid gangs” called the Brooklyn Rippers and the Forty Thieves Juniors. Capone was a bright kid but was led the wrong way and decided to drop out of school in the sixth grade at the age of 14. He then became part of the notorious Five Points gang in Manhattan while working many different jobs. While working at the Harvard Inn as a bouncer and bartender he received his infamous facial scars resulting in the nickname “scarface”. In 1918, Capone met a girl named Mary “Mae” Coughlin and on December 4th of that same year Mae gave birth to their son, Albert. Capone and Mae married 26 days later on December 30th.
