According to the dictionary of literary terms and devices, a motif is a �recurring structure, contrast, or literary device that can help to develop and inform the text�s major themes. Arthur Miller uses a variety of different motifs in Death of a Salesman. One of the motifs he uses is mythic figures and regions. Willy�s tendency to mythologize people and places contributes to his diluted understanding of the world. A figure that Willy tends to mythologize is an eighty-four year old salesman, Dave Singleman. Mr. Singleman often telephoned his buyers and would make sales without ever leaving his hotel room. When he died the noble �death of a salesman�, hundreds of salesman and buyers attended his funeral. �At the age of eighty-four, he made his living. And when I saw that, I realized that selling was the greatest career a man could want. �Cause what could be more satisfying then to be able to go, at the age of eighty-four, into twenty or thirty different cities, and pick up a phone, and be remembered and loved and helped by so many different people?� (pg. 81).
