Plato’s Phaedo
In the opening of Plato’s Phaedo, Plato introduces the well known myth of Theseus and the Minotaur to Echecrates. The narrated story of Socrates’ in Phaedo by Plato is assumingly parallel to that of the well known myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. There are points which it suggests as though Socrates in the new philosophical Theseus. In which case, the fear of death is presented as the evil Minotaur.
Socrates explains that death is the separation of the soul from the body which means that after death the soul and body exist apart from each other. The fear of death by Socrates’ companions is not that of the physical part but, the fear of the afterlife and immortality or mortality of the soul. The fear of death does not concern how one dies, whether it be drowning, dying in one’s sleep, or in Socrates’ case, being executed for ‘corrupting the youth‘. It’s life after death, and what happens to one’s soul is the cause of the fear. Socrates’ must save his companions from the fear of death, because he explains that philosophers should be ready and willing to die......
