With the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in December 1865, slavery was officially abolished in all areas of the United States. The 13th amendment marked the beginning of the Reconstruction Era, the period which the 11 Confederate states would gradually reintroduced to the Union. The 13th Amendment states the following:
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Before the Civil War, February 1861, Congress had passed a 13th amendment for the opposite purpose to guarantee the legality and perpetuity of slavery in the slave states, rather than to end it. The Civil War had started before it was sent to the states for ratification.
