The story unfolds with Stephen Kumalo, who has set off to Johannesburg-a city in South Africa in quest of his sister Gertrude and his son Absalom after receiving a letter from Msimangu, a fellow priest in Johannesburg. However, the closer Kumalo has got to finding them, the more fear he has acquired, not only of the dangerous situation of Gertrude and Absalom but also of the future of South Africa.
